Entering the construction field as a woman can be a daunting challenge. I remember my early days in the industry vividly—walking onto work sites where my presence was often met with skepticism and, at times, outright disrespect. As a young woman, I frequently encountered inappropriate comments and sexual remarks, particularly from roofers, which left me feeling disheartened and isolated. It was a tough landscape to navigate, and there were moments when it seemed like the world was stacked against me.

However, during those trying times, I drew strength from my faith, my love for my work, and the unwavering support of my incredible husband. My faith played a crucial role in helping me persevere. I often reflected on the words of my Saviour, who, even on the cross, asked His Father to “forgive them, for they know not what they do.” This perspective allowed me to approach the negativity with compassion rather than bitterness, reminding me that many of those who were unkind simply didn’t understand the impact of their words and actions.

In addition to my faith, my husband’s encouragement was a constant source of strength. He stood by me through the tough times, and his belief in me never wavered. With his support and a resolute passion for my work, I pressed on, determined to make my mark in the industry.

Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to say that I’ve carved out a successful career as a director in building engineering. It wasn’t an easy road, but I’ve earned the respect of contractors, clients, and colleagues. One thing that might surprise those who meet me is that, despite my position, I don’t take myself too seriously. I’m known for my sense of humor and for always being up for a good laugh. If people didn’t know my role, they might not guess that I’m a director based on how light-hearted and teasing I can be.

Laughter has been a vital part of my journey. It’s not just about making the work environment more enjoyable; it’s a way to connect with others, break down barriers, and remind myself that even in a challenging field, there’s room for joy and camaraderie.

Reflecting on my journey, I realize that the challenges I faced only strengthened my resolve and deepened my gratitude for the support I received. It’s a testament to the power of faith, love, and a positive attitude in overcoming obstacles. For anyone facing similar struggles, I hope my story serves as a reminder that with perseverance, support, and a touch of humor, you can turn adversity into opportunity and create a path where respect and success follow.
